Tulfo warns against scammers promising DSWD cash aid

Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Erwin T. Tulfo reminded the public to be vigilant and not to entertain individuals posing as officials or agency personnel and promising assistance in exchange for registration fees.

Tulfo pointed out that DSWD does not charge any fees and that all of its programs and services are free to the public, especially poor and vulnerable Filipinos.

He made the statement after Regional Director of DSWD Field Office X, Mari-Flor Dollanga, and Cagayan de Oro Police Station introduced Secretary Tulfo to an arrested con man who used the DSWD name in his modus operandi. .

According to director Dollanga, the arrested personality presented himself as a DSWD official and received a fee of 350 to 500 pesos per person, in exchange for a promise that his victims would be placed on the list of beneficiaries of aid to education and social betterment program. Upon verification with the agency, DSWD confirmed that the alleged scammer is in no way related and is not an employee of the Department.

The suspected scammer was arrested in a joint entrapment operation with the Philippine National Police (PNP) on July 18.

During questioning, he confessed that five other suspected crooks were roaming around Cagayan de Oro doing the same.

Tulfo called on the public to be more careful and not give any information to an individual promising help and asking for money in return. He urged those who are aware of a similar incident to report it to the nearest local DSWD office.

DSWD also clarified that there are necessary processes and criteria to be met as well as forms to be completed to be included in its programs and services.
